title sequence

Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary sitcom about the daily lives of teachers working in underfunded, mismanaged schools. This title sequence focuses on the individual characteristics of the main cast, who have all won my heart.

Frame concepts

Quinta’s character, Janine, is an optimistic, goody-two-shoes second grade teacher. As the main character, I based this frame on apples because it’s an icon for school. The apples in the frame were hand drawn with colored pencil and cutout/color edited in Photoshop.

Tyler’s frame is in reference to his classroom and character background. Gregory has a green thumb, tends to the school garden, and decorates his classroom using his first-grade students’ artwork. I had to write with my less dominant hand to mimic a child’s handwriting.

Janelle plays Ava, the school’s principal. Her personality is very outgoing, flashy, and conceited. This concept revolves around all the achievements and awards you’d typically hang up on your fridge door growing up and the idea of showing off!

Chris plays a 6th grade history teacher named Jacob. This is a simple reference to the podcast club he starts at Abbott.

I initially had trouble coming up with a frame that represented Lisa’s character, Melissa, well. I referenced the “Read-A-Thon” episode where her character hands her student a book with the first letter of words highlighted to help her read. I utilized ChatGPT to write me 2nd grade level short stories for this concept.

And finally, Sheryl’s character Barbara plays a religious kindergarten teacher. I didn’t want to include anything obviously religious in the frame and wanted to hint at the childishness of kindergarten. I eventually decided to do handprints in reference to finger painting, a childhood activity, and the idea of helping hands as Barbara has high morals.
